Banquet Today!

Just a reminder we are having our end of year banquet today. Please bring in jerseys and shorts if you have not already done so. If you would like to contribute to the banquet, the best thing to do would be to offer a little cash to Sheila and Sharon for purchasing all of the pizza. We'll plan on eating around 4:30-5. Hope to see everyone (parents and players) today!

End of Season Banquet

We will have an end of season banquet for all players and parents this Thursday (February 22) in the TIS gym. We will do this in our normal practice slot from 3:30-5:30. The first hour or so will be spent playing some games and shooting hoops. I'll run a "Hot Shots" challenge for everyone on the team for some bragging rights during this time. Around 4:30-5 we'll have some pizza and drinks and hang out and eat. After that, or during, Coach Blakney and I will give out some awards for the team. Please contact Sheila Blakney (smblakney@gmail.com) and Sharon Charlton (charltons@sbcglobal.net) if you'd like to help out in any way. Thanks for a great season and I hope to see you all on Thursday.

No Practice 1/15

Unfortunately our season ended today. There will be no practice tomorrow or Friday. We will have a banquet in the next couple of weeks. I will let you all know as soon as I have a date for that. Thank you, and your kids, for an amazing season.

Update 2/12

First I'd like to say what a great team performance the boys delivered in Ridgway today. Our defense was pretty good but our offense looked better than it's been all year. Way to go boys!

Tomorrow's practice will be from 2:00-4:00pm with early release.

Quick Summary for Wednesday:

We play Ridgway at 4:15. If we win we play the winner of Ouray/Naturita at 5:30. We need to beat Ridgway to make sure we play next Saturday (my guess is in Mancos). If we beat the winner of the Ouray/Naturita game we will go into Saturday as the #1 in the North League. This is a big advantage because hopefully we can avoid playing Mancos in the first round. We will go to Ouray early to watch the Ouray/Naturita game. See below for full details sent by Ouray AD this morning.

SJBL MS B BSKT North Regional Tournament: 2018

Hosted by Ouray Middle School…Wednesday, February 14, 2018

G1: 3:00 p.m. = #4 Naturita vs #1 Ouray

G2: 4:15 p.m. = #3 Ridgway vs #2 Telluride

G3 (Championship): 5:30 p.m. = winner of G2 vs winner of G1

Warm-up time for G1 and G2 will be ten minutes.

Warm-up and rest/recovery time for G3 for the G2 winner will be 15 minutes…or can be shortened to 10 minutes by mutual agreement of the teams involved.

  • If we get ahead of schedule, we will stay ahead of schedule!

The winner of G3 becomes the North #1 seed and the runner-up of G3 becomes the North #2 seed for the cross-bracketed Finals on Saturday, February 17, at the site of the South #1 seed…times & match-ups = TBA.

Parking: Buses are to unload teams in the alley by the gym, and then proceed to park on 5th, 4th or Main St., or any of the cross-avenues south of 7th Avenue, to allow access for the Ouray buses to run routes at the end of the day. 7th Avenue in-between the school, playground and gym needs to remain accessible for fan parking and parent parking, because it is also Ouray Parent/Teacher conference day. Since we have three schools visiting Ouray for this tournament, buses will NOT be allowed to remain parked in the alley as we do when we host a single opponent. We have lots of snow on the ground, so be creative!

No gate admission will be charged.

1. The higher seed of each contest will be the “Home” team on the score board, will wear white and will have its bench to the right of the scorer’s table as you face the court. Bring both white and dark uniforms, just in case!

2. Each locker room will be shared by two teams, so please take all belongings upstairs to your team’s gathering area after dressing out.

2.  Please bag all warm-up balls to prevent any from “wandering” onto the court during the games. No street shoes on the gym floor.

3. Ouray coaches, Bernie Pearce and Kenneth Nelson, are also the event supervisors. Exhibit sportsmanship for the enjoyment of all involved.

4.  Concessions in the cafeteria will be available, starting at approximately 4:00 p.m., along with a delicious soup supper option, both provided by the Ouray NJHS. This feast of soup, salad and bread costs $7.00, and the proceeds will go toward the dZi Foundation and their work in Nepal. Please support this effort!

News!

Both the A and B teams won tonight in Norwood. Great games by both teams.

Tomorrow we have A and B games at home against Ouray starting at 4. All 15 players that were at practice Tuesday will play tomorrow.

Saturday is A only in Dolores. I will determine Friday after practice who will be attending. We will play Mancos at 9am in the AUX gym. Mancos is a great team and beat Ignacio by 30+ points this year so it will be a challenge. We will then get another chance to play Dolores at 10:15 in the main gym. More details to come on Friday.

Norwood 2/7 Roster

The following kids will be leaving at 2:15 tomorrow for A and B games in Norwood. Middle School students will be released at 2:00 from class. I think the best thing for 6th graders to do is leave Ski PE at lunch time. I will e-mail teachers, administrators, and secretaries to let them know this.

11:15 Telluride vs Dove Creek
12:30 Norwood vs Dove Creek
1:45 Ignacio vs Norwood

All students that have attended practice Wednesday, Thursday, Friday this week should attend the games. We will be leaving at 6:30am from in front of the high school. If you are not on the bus at 6:30, we will leave without you. I want to stress that you need to be on time and we will not hesitate to leave people that do not arrive on time. As always, we will not be stopping for any food so please make sure you provide your kid with everything he will need for the day. There may be concessions but do not rely on that in case they do not have anything for sale. Hopefully we can be back around 4pm. Thanks.

Roster 1/30 & Other News

Please see the list below for tomorrow's rosters against Norwood.

A: Andrew, Kaizer, Declan, Max G, South, Michael, Colby, Loudon, Joe G

B: Eli, Owen, Ricky, Tony, Brandon, Loudon, Cash, Townes, Will, Joe G

On a great note, Iganacio has got enough refs together to run a B and C game on Saturday. We will be taking all kids on Saturday that have regularly shown up to practice and attend practice on Friday and are not late. For C team, this will be their final game. We will stop practicing with C team at that point so we can help prepare the A and B team for the end of season stretch.

Roster 1/25 in Ouray

As always the roster for tomorrow was chosen based on attitude, effort, and attendance. There are some lineup changes for tomorrow. Do not take it personally if you are not playing; we are trying to switch up some lineups and reward people for attending practice and working hard. The bus will leave at 1:30 and I will e-mail all teachers to release students at 1:15. We will not be stopping for food so make sure you have everything you need for the evening. Due to travel limitations, Coach Blakney and myself will each be driving a Suburban so our numbers are limited to 14. We will probably be home late again (maybe 9pm). Here are the 14 kids traveling:

Andrew, South, Declan, Michael, Colby, Max G, Kaizer, Joe, Eli, John, Loudon, Lucas, Brandon & Tony

Thanks and have a great evening.

Tough Night in Dolores & Rosters 1/23

All I can say to summarize tonight is that our boys played their hearts out! I am going to leave it at that. We will keep the rosters the same for tomorrow so if you played A or B tonight you will play in those games tomorrow. The B game will begin in the THS gym at 4:00 followed by the A game. As always, thanks to everyone for coming on the road and supporting us tonight...it was nice to get a little love in a place like that.

News & Updates

Just wanted to update everyone on a couple of things. Our game in Ridgway scheduled for 2/1 has been moved to 2/12. Initially we were supposed to have A, B and C games Saturday 2/3 in Ignacio. We will have A games only as Ignacio is having a tough time finding referees for so many games.

With that being said, there is the possibility that today is our last C game. I have spoken with Mr. Murray and we are trying to put together a C team tournament with a couple of other schools that are interested. If this doesn't work, we will hire referees and do our own, internal C team tournament some weekend. I know this is a bummer but we are only able to play C games when our opponent has them as well. Thanks for understanding and I will keep you all posted if anything changes. Thanks.

Roster for Monday in Dolores

The roster was easy to pick for Dolores on Monday. We are taking all of the kids that were at practice on Friday. Remember that in order to play in a game you must attend the most recent practice. That means that for our Tuesday games against Naturita at home we will only select from these 22 players as well.

Monday in Dolores:

A: South, Declan, Max G, Michael, Colby, Kaizer, Noah, Joe, Loudon (+1-2 more from B game)

B: Joe, Loudon, Kaizer, Noah, Tony, Eli, Cash, Lucas, Will

C: Ricky, Will, Jackson, Finn, Max I, Owen, James, Cesar, Brandon

We will be leaving the school at 2pm on Monday afternoon. We will probably be back somewhere between 8-9pm. We will not stop for food so make sure you have everything you need packed. Thanks.

Parent Volunteers?

I have had three parents volunteer to help coach C team kids for an additional hour after practice (from 4:30-5:30). They'd also like to run C team practices when there are not C team games. They are looking for some others to help with this. Please respond to me at thalliday@telluride.k12.co.us if you are interested in helping these parents/boys out and I will put you in contact with them. Thanks to everyone for pitching in to make this a successful season!

Ridway Recap & Additional Information

As always thanks for showing up this afternoon to cheer on the boys...I even saw some parents watching whose kids were not playing today! Ridgway was less of a challenge than Dolores yesterday, and we'll likely see teams better than Dolores and weaker than Ridgway throughout the season. All kids that played put in a great effort and contributed towards the win. The game got a little tight at the end but we were able to hold on for the win.

Coach Blakney and myself have decided to make a change to our practice schedule. With so many kids it's been quite difficult to get everyone prepared for games. We will have a practice for everyone starting at 3:30 and ending at 4:30. This one hour block will focus on fundamentals and teaching kids the game of basketball. We are planning on running it like a basketball camp. At 4:30, kids that play on the C team will leave practice. We will then continue to practice for another hour from 4:30-5:30 with the A and B players only. This will give us the opportunity to work with these kids on offensive/defensive strategies, individual skills, conditioning, etc. I hope you understand why we are doing this and that it is designed to help all kids in the long run. Thanks.

Dolores Recap/Info

Thanks to everyone that showed up today to cheer us. Both B and C teams won their games with great effort from everyone involved. It was the first game ever for many and everybody did a great job. The A team came up a bit short against a good, tall Dolores team. I can't wait to play these guys again in their gym!

Tomorrow we will have only one game (A team) against Ridgway in the TIS gym at 4pm. The following people will be playing in that game:

Andrew, South, Declan, Colby, Michael, Kaizer, Max G, Loudon, Cash

Thanks.

Rosters for 1/15 & 1/16

Below are the rosters for Monday (1/15) against Dolores and Tuesday (1/16) against Ridgway. Just like last time, these kids were chosen to play because they have showed great attendance, attitude, and effort. Monday we will play in the THS gym and Tuesday will be at TIS.

Monday:

A: Andrew Charlton, Kaizer Gorraiz, South Livermore, Michael Price, Colby Taschek, Max Grizzell, Loudon Doemland, Cash Livermore

B: Kaizer Gorraiz, Noah Meilander, Emmett Sante, Eli Blakney, Tony Ordonez, Loudon Doemland, Cash Livermore, Will Metheny, Joe Galbo, Declan Jodlowski

?C: John O'Neill Johnson, James Ruenz, Owen Doyle, Max Imwalle, Townes Merritt, Jett Nash, Brandon Trujillo, Emmett Murphy, Cesar Romo Sandoval, Jackson Campbell, Tony Ordonez

?Tuesday:

A: Andrew Charlton, Kaizer Gorraiz, South Livermore, Michael Price, Colby Tasheck, Max Grizzell, Cash Livermore (1-3 more)

Please note that we have multiple swing players so your kid may be playing in a couple games. Team assignments can change from day to day. Just because your child has played as an A, B, or C player does not mean they will be on that team for the entire year. Monday evening I will decide which other players will be joining A team for the game on Tuesday. I'd like to see how kids perform Monday before making that decision. Thanks for all the support so far. Go Miners!

Naturita Game Recap/Additional Info

The boys played two great games in Naturita today, winning both the A and B games. The boys were a lot of fun to watch and every player contributed to the wins. We still have a lot to work on but I couldn't be more proud of these boys playing this way after only 3 practices. I honestly think this group of kids could be special this year!

Our next games will be Monday and Tuesday at home. On Monday, Dolores will be visiting and we should have an A, B and C game in the THS gym. Tuesday, we will play Ridgway in the TIS gym. Unfortunately, they e-mailed yesterday and informed us they will only have an A team. Coach Blakney and myself will sit down tomorrow after practice and figure out rosters for Monday and Tuesday. I will post that update Friday evening.

One thing I forgot to mention about practice attendance: Kids will not play if they miss the most recent practice before a game. With that being said, if your child is not at practice tomorrow they will be ineligible to play on Monday or Tuesday.

Thank you to those that made the trip to Naturita today and cheered us on. Go Miners!

Roster 1/11 Naurita

Our decision to take 38 kids down to 13 to travel was very difficult after practice today. We have several criteria for those that will be traveling. First, we only looked at kids that have attended all 3 practices and have handed in their Physical and Permission to Perform forms. Second, we took into account their effort and attitude at practice. Here are the 13 kids that will be traveling tomorrow:

Andrew Charlton

Kaizer Gorraiz

South Livermore

Noah Meilander

Michael Price

Emmett Sante

?Eli Blakney

Max Grizzell

?Loudon Doemland

Cash Livermore

Townes Merritt

Will Metheny

?Joe Galbo

?Students will be dismissed at 1:15 and we will be ready to load the bus and leave at 1:30. I will e-mail all teachers so they are aware of this. Please provide your kid with food/snacks for the afternoon and into the evening...WE WILL NOT STOP FOR FOOD! B games typically take about one hour and A games will last around 1.5 hours. Plan on us being back around 7:30-8. We will have kids text/call parents when we are in Placerville. Please try to arrive to pick kids up on time. Thanks.
