TURN ’EM LOOSE

Traveling south and east to Durango on Saturday, August 31, THS’ cross-country runners—or at least a hearty few of them—saw their first action this fall at the DHS Invitational.

Lucas Vatter-Paez placed 51st in the high-school boys’ race, negotiating Durango Mesa Park in 26 minutes, 39.66 seconds—or 8:26.34 behind Shiprock, New Mexico’s Kaden Lapahie (18:13.32), who finished 21st at the 2023 NMAA Class 4A State Championships.

In the girls’ feature, THS’ Austin Cook placed a strong third overall with her 22:29.75 trailing the efforts of only Durango’s Lacy Ruggiero (21:58.13) and Albuquerque, N.M., Sandia Prep’s Kate Henderson (20:28.59), third-fastest in NMAA Class 3A last year.  Additionally for Telluride, Liv Speck finished 13th in 24:23.20 and Calliope Barber 39th in 31:28.41.

THS will pause from competition this weekend, so to continue a tradition of manning an on-course aid station during the 2024 Imogene Pass Run on Saturday, September 7.  The squad’s next action is slated to come on the 14th at Gunnison’s Cowboy Invitational.
