Matt Oakes named Head Athletic Trainer

 The Telluride High School Athletic Department is excited to announce the hiring of Matt Oakes as our Head Athletic Trainer. Matt will be filling the vacant position once held by Jonathan Liaos, who resigned from the position in 2023 when he moved to California. 

Matt served as the head athletic trainer for the USA Luge team for three winter olympic games (2014, 2018, 2022). As the head athletic trainer for the USA Luge team, Matt was responsible for emergency response, orthopedic evaluation/ rehabilitation, sports psychology, nutrition and strength/ conditioning. Recently Matt moved to Telluride from Lake Placid, NY where he established his sports massage and exercise science business that he will continue in Telluride. Matt taught in the biology department at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, NY as an adjunct professor. Matt took the job as the climbing director for Telluride Academy prompting his move to Colorado this past May. In his spare time Matt enjoys rock climbing, ice climbing, split boarding, ski touring, mountain biking and mountain running which makes him a perfect fit for our community. Matt is looking forward to joining the school community and helping our student-athletes perform healthy and at their best. Matt will be joining our staff in the coming weeks so please introduce yourself and say hello when you see him!
